“We wanted to find a way to celebrate the City of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary and also support the City’s larger goals of becoming the greenest in the world,” said Faye Wightman, President and CEO of Vancouver Foundation. “What better way to accomplish that goal than to get our young people to let their imaginations go green, and then provide them with funding to implement their green neighbourhood ideas.”
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson welcomed these unique awards and made his own challenge to the city’s children and youth.
“I am hopeful the youth of today will become known as the green generation,” said Mayor Robertson. “I am challenging our city’s young people to send in their best ideas for how they would make their neighbourhood greener. Since these awards are open to a variety of ideas — from promoting recycling, saving energy, encouraging more cycling and walking, using waste in innovative ways, etc. — I am eager to see how imaginative are young people can be.”
The deadline to apply for the Generation Green Awards is March 4, 2011.
